Salawaat with Hadith Qudsi
One of the most pleasing features of this kitab is that Shaykh 'Abdur Rahman Chohravi presents many salawaat with the Hadith Qudsi as well. The difference between Hadith Qudsi and Hadith Nabawi is that while Hadith Nabawi are sayings of the blessed Prophet Sallallahu 'alaihi wa Sallam, Hadith Qudsi is what Allah has communicated to him through revelation, inspiration, or in a dream, and the beloved Prophet has then communicated it in his own words. The Qur'an is of course superior to Hadith Qudsi because besides being revealed, it is Allah's own Word.

One of the salawaat in the Majmu'ah containing a Hadith Qudsi is as follows:

Allahumma Salli 'alaa Sayyidina Muhammad-i nillazee
Qaala fi'l Qudsiyyi Qaal'Allahu
Ya'bna Adam-a
Kam min siraajinn atfaahu'r reehu
Wa kam min 'aabidin afsadahu'l 'ujbu
Wa kam min faqeerin afsadahu'l faqru
Wa kam min ghaniyyin afsadahu'l ghinaa
Wa kam min saheehin afsadahu'l 'aafiyah
Wa kam min 'aalimin afsadahu'l 'ilmu
Yaa bani Adam-a
Zaari'oonee wa raabihoonee wa aasiqoonee wa 'aamiloonee
Inna rib'hakum 'indee maa laa 'ainun ra'at
Wa laa uzunun sami'at
Wa laa khatara 'alaa qalbi basharin
Wa laa yanfadu khazaainee
Wa laa yanqasu mulkee
Ana'l Wahhaab

O Allah! Bestow blessings on Sayyidina Muhammad
who said in a Hadith Qudsi that Allah said:
O son of Adam!
How many lamps have been put out by the wind,
and how many worshippers have been destroyed by pride,
and how many faqeers (derveshes) have been destroyed by faqr (poverty),
and how many of the rich have been destroyed by riches,
and how many of the healthy have been destroyed by good health,
and how many of the learned have been destroyed by knowledge?
O son of Adam!
Sow for me, profit for my sake, put your confidence in me, and work for me.
Truly, the gain you will have with me,
no eye has seen, no ear has heard and no human mind has any idea about.
My treasures do not run out and my Kingdom does not decrease.
I am the Bestower.

The beloved Prophet's knowledge of the unseen

Chapter 21, "Fee Ilmihi wa Ilmi Gaybihi" (On His Knowledge Of The Seen And Unseen), has 361 salawaat proving that the blessed Prophet Sallallahu 'alaihi wa Sallam had the knowledge of the seen as well as the unseen. For example, the beloved Prophet Sallallahu 'alaihi wa Sallam had seen heaven and hell, he had seen angel Jibril 'alaihissalaam as well as the other angels, he had been to the seven skies and met the Prophets 'alaihimussalaam on them when he was invited by Allah on mi'raj, he had seen the punishment given to sinners in their graves, he knew who would go to heaven and hell, he knew that Imam Hasan Rady Allahu 'Anhu would one day unite two Muslim factions, and he knew that Sayyidah Fatima Rady Allahu 'Anha would be the first to follow him after he left his earthly existence. He made many other prophecies all of which came true. For example, he prophesized that Allah Ta'ala will conquer Rome and Persia for the Muslims. He knew about Sidratu'l Muntaha (the farthest Lote-tree), Arsh (Allah's Throne), Maqam Mahmud (The Highest Praised Station), as well as the Tasbeehaat (hymns) of the angels in the various heavens. He informed us that the Tasbeeh (hymn) of the angels in the first heaven is "Sub'hana Zi'l Mulki wa'l Malakoot" and Shaykh 'Abdur Rahman Chohravi Rahmatullahi 'alaih has a salaat for it:

Allahumma Salli wa Sallim 'alaa Sayyidina Muhammad-in
Wa 'alaa aali Sayyidina Muhammad-i
Nilladhee akhbara anna Tasbeeha malaaika-ta's-samaa-id-dunyaa
Sub'haana Zi'l Mulki Wa'l Malakoot

O Allah! Bestow blessings and peace on Sayyidina Muhammad
and on the family of Sayyidina Muhammad
who informed us that the hymn of the angels on the first sky is:
Glory be to Allah! Owner of the Kingdom and Sovereignty

In the same way, he informed us about the Tasbeehaat (hymns) of the angels on the other skies as follows:

On the second sky: Sub'haana Zi'l Izzati wa'l Jabaroot
Glory be to Allah! Possessor of Honour and Omnipotence

On the third sky: Su'bhaana'l Hayyi'lladhee laa yamoot
Glory be to Allah! Everliving, Everlasting

On the fourth sky: Subboohun Quddoosun Rabbunaa wa Rabbu'l Malaaikati Wa'rrooh
Glory be to Allah, The Most Holy One, Our Lord,
and the Lord of the angels and of the Archangel Jibril Alayhissalam

On the fifth sky: Sub'haana Man Jama'a bayna'th-thalji wa'n-naar
Glory be to Allah! Who brought together ice and fire

On the sixth sky: Sub'haana'l Maliki'l Quddoosi Rabbi Kulli Shay'in wa Ilay-hi'nnushoor
Glory be to Allah! The Sovereign, The Most Holy One, Lord of all Creation
and to Him is the return (on the Day of Judgement)

On the seventh sky: Sub'haana Khaaliqinnoor
Glory be to Allah! The Creator of Light

When we finish praying Chapter 21 of Majmu'ah Salawaat-u'r-Rasul, we obtain the certitude that Allah gave the sum total of all knowledge, both manifest and hidden to the beloved Prophet Sallallahu 'alaihi wa Sallam who then distributes it among people in proportion to what has been decreed for them by Allah Ta'ala Khaaliq u'l Arsh.

His love for Allah and the Prophet (s)
Shaykh 'Abdur Rahman Chohravi received this priceless inheritance in immense measure. As you pray each chapter, you marvel at his love for Allah, for the beloved Prophet, Sallallahu 'alaihi wa Sallam, for his family, his companions, the awliya (saints) and the saleheen (pious). In Chapter 30, "Fee Khayri Khalqihi wa Khayri Ummatihi" (On The Best Of Creation And The Best Of His Followers), he offers salawaat on the Holy Prophet and on all the other Prophets alaihimussalaam (mentioning more than a hundred Prophets by name), on the ummuhaat u'l mu'mineen (mothers of faithful believers), especially on Sayyidah Khadija and Sayyidah 'Aisha, on the Ahl u'l Bayt (his blessed household), especially Sayyidina Ali, Sayyidah Fatima, Sayyidina Imam Hasan, and Sayyidina Imam Husain, Rady Allahu 'Anhum, and on the Khulafa ar-Rashideen al-Mahdiyyeen, that is Sayyidina Abubakar Siddiq, Sayyidina 'Umar Farooq, Sayyidina 'Uthman and Sayyidina 'Ali Rady Allahu 'Anhum, on the other sahaba (companions), mentioning more than a hundred sahaba by name, on the awliya and saleheen especially on Muhyuddin Shaykh 'Abdulqadir Jilani QaddasAllahu Sirrahu'l 'Azeez as well as the awliya in Tariqatu'l Qadiriyya, Chishtiyya and Naqshbandiyya.

Let us savour seven salawaat from the Majmu'ah to appreciate his love for the noble Prophet Sallallahu 'alaihi wa Sallam.

Noor-e-Muhammad-i Sallallahu 'alaihi wa Sallam
Allahumma Salli wa Sallim 'alaa Sayyidina Muhammad-in
Wa 'alaa aali Sayyidina Muhammad-i nilladhee
Khalaq'Allahu noorahoo qabla'l khalqi
Wa khalaqa minhu jamee'al ashyaai

O Allah! Bestow blessings and peace on Sayyidina Muhammad
and on the family of Sayyidina Muhammad
whose noor (light) Allah created before (other) creation
and from it created all other things.

Qadama Sidqin
Allahumma Salli wa Sallim 'alaa qadami sidqin
Salaatan tuqaddimunaa bihaa
Ilaa sidqi'l masdooqeena'l muqarrabeena'l mahboobeena'l mubash-shireena
Wa bash-shirillazeena aamanoo anna lahum qadama sidqin 'inda rabbihim

O Allah! Bestow blessings and peace on "the footing of truth";
such blessings which will lead us towards
the truth whose truth was accepted, the near and dear, the beloved,
the givers of glad news (as You told the beloved Prophet):
and give glad news to the believers
that they have a footing of truth with their Lord (10:2)

How He Spent His Time
Allahumma Salli wa Sallim 'alaa Sayyidina Muhammad-in
Wa 'alaa aali Sayyidina Muhammad-i nilladhee
Kaana awqaatuhoo thalaathata ajzaa-in
Juz'an Lillahi wa juz'an li ahlihee wa juz'an linafsihee
Thumma juz'uhoo baynahoo wa baynannaas

O Allah! Bestow blessings and peace on Sayyidina Muhammad
and on the family of Sayyidina Muhammad
whose time was used in three parts:
one part was for Allah, one part was for the family, and one part was for himself;
then the part that was for himself, he again divided into two:
one for himself and one for his dealings with people.

His Sifaat
Allahumma Salli wa Sallim 'alaa Sayyidina Muhammad-in
Wa 'alaa aali Sayyidina Muhammad-i nilladhee
Kaanati'l ma'rifatu ra'sa maalihee
Watta'atu ghaayata aamaalihee
Wa'l 'aqlu asla deenihee
Wattafakkuru dhiyaa-a yaqeenihee
Wa'l hubbu asaasuhoo

Wa'ssabru ridaa'uhoo
Wa'ttawakkulu kisaauhoo
Wa'rridhaau durratu taajihee
Wa'l yaqeenu nooru siraajihee
Wa'l khashyatu thamaratu fu'aadihee
Wa'ssidqu zaadu ma'adihee
Wa'l faqru fakhruhoo 'alaa aqraanihee
Wa'l 'ajzu ilaa Hadhratillahi Ta'ala rawnaqu bustaanihee

O Allah! Bestow blessings and peace on Sayyidina Muhammad
and on the family of Sayyidina Muhammad
whose knowledge was his capital,
and obedience (of Allah) was his final end and purpose,
and intellect was the basis of his religion,
and meditation was the brightness of his certitude,
and love was his foundation,
and fear (of Allah) was his clothing,
and ardent desire (to please Allah at all times) was his conveyance,
and abstinence was his profit,
and the rememberance of Allah The Exalted was his close friend,
and grief was his sitting companion,
and patience was his robe,
and reliance on Allah was his garment,
and contentment was a pearl in his crown,
and certitude was the light of his lamp,
and fear (of Allah) was the fruit of his heart,
and truth was the provision for his hereafter,
and poverty was what he prided himself about over others,
and incapacity in the Presence of Allah The Exalted was the beauty of his garden.

Basharun Laa Ka'l Bashar
Allahumma Salli wa Sallim 'alaa Sayyidina Muhammad-in
Wa 'alaa aali Sayyidina Muhammad-in
Basharun laa ka'l bashar
Wa nisbatuhoo mina'l khalqi
Nisbatu yaaqutin bayna hajarin

O Allah! Bestow blessings and peace on Sayyidina Muhammad
and on the family of Sayyidina Muhammad
who was a human being but not like other human beings.
His comparison with creation
is like that of a diamond among stones.

Shariah, Tariqa, Haqiqa, Ma'rifa
Allahumma Salli wa Sallim 'alaa Mutaa'in
Salaatan tutee'unaa bihaa
Shari'ata'l Muhammadiyyati
Wa Tariqata'l Ahmadiyyati
Wa Haqeeqata's Sarmadiyyati
Wa Ma'rifata'l Ilaahiyyati bi ita'ati
Atee'ullaha wa atee'urrasool

O Allah! Bestow blessings and peace on the one who is obeyed;
such blessings by means of which You may make us obey
Sayyidina Muhammad's Shariah (law),
Sayyidina Ahmad's Tariqa (spiritual path),
the eternal Haqiqa (Essential reality),
and Allah's Ma'rifa (Knowledge);
by obeying (the verse of the Qur'an):
Obey Allah and obey the Messenger (4:59).

In this salaat, four of the blessed names of the beloved Prophet Sallallahu 'alaihi wa Sallam have been used: Mutaa'un, Muhammad, Ahmad and Rasul.

Fanaa Fillah, Baqaa Billah
Allahumma Salli wa Sallim 'alaa Sayyidina Muhammad-in
Wa 'alaa aali Sayyidina Muhammad-i nil
Faanee feeka fee kulli'l awqaati
Wa'l baaqee bika fee jamee'il haalaati

O Allah! Bestow blessings and peace on Sayyidina Muhammad
and on the family of Sayyidina Muhammad
who was extinct in You at all times
and who was abiding with You in all situations.

Salaat on the Salaah of the Prophet (s)
An established tradition among the mashaaikh (spiritual masters) who have composed salawaat is to invoke blessings of Allah on each of the 'amal (actions and deeds) of the blessed Prophet Sallallahu 'alaihi wa Sallam. Shaykh 'Abdur Rahman Chohravi is no exception. His salaat (blessing) on the salaah (daily worship) of the beloved Prophet Sallallahu 'alaihi wa Sallam is a gem nobody would like to part with.

Allahumma Salli wa Sallim 'alaa Sayyidina Muhammad-in
Wa 'alaa aali Sayyidina Muhammad-in
Wa 'alaa jiz'ihee fi'l jizaa'i
Wa niyyatihee fi'n niyyaati
Wa takbeerihee fi't takbeeraati
Wa tahreematihee fi't tahreemaati
Wa fardhihee fi'l faraaidhi
Wa waajibihee fi'l waajibaati
Wa sunnatihee fi's sunani
Wa mustahabbatihee fi'l mustahabbaati
Wa naflihee fi'n nawaafili
Wa mubaahihee fi'l mubaahaati
Wa tahajjudihee fi'l mutahajjideena
Wa qira'atihee fi'l qurraai

O Allah! Bestow blessings and peace on Sayyidina Muhammad
and on the family of Sayyidina Muhammad
and on his tree stump among all tree stumps,
and on his intention among all intentions,
and on his takbeer (Allahu Akbar) among all takbeeraat,
and on his tahreem (to start a fardh), among all tahreemaat,
and on his fardh among all faraaidh,
and on his waajib among all waajibaat,
and on his sunnah among all sunnah,
and on his mustahab among all mustahabbaat,
and on his nafl among all nawaafil,
and on his mubaah among all mubaahaat,
and on his tahajjud salaah among all tahajjud salaah,
and on his recitation among all recitations.

In invoking blessings on the salaah of the beloved Prophet, the Shaykh also invokes blessings on the tree stump where he used to deliver his Friday khutbah (sermon) until a pulpit was built for him as we learn from this blessed Hadith Shareef :

Narrated by Jabir bin Abdullah Rady Allahu Anhu: The Prophet Sallallahu alaihi wa Sallam used to stand by a tree or a date palm on Friday. Then an Ansari woman or man said, "O Allah's Apostle! Shall we make a pulpit for you?" He replied, "If you wish". So they made a pulpit for him and when it was Friday, he proceeded towards the pulpit (for delivering the sermon). The date-palm cried like a child! The Prophet Sallallahu alaihi wa Sallam descended (the pulpit) and embraced it while it continued moaning like a child being quietened. The Prophet Sallallahu alaihi wa Sallam said, "It was crying for (missing) what it used to hear of religious knowledge given near to it" (Bukhari)

Salaat with Tasbeehaat
Trust Shaykh 'Abdur Rahman Chohravi Rahmatullahi 'alaih to come up with a salaat with Tasbeehaat as in this instance:

Allahumma Salli 'alaa Sayyidina Muhammad-i nilladhee qaala
Sub'haanAllahi wa'l Hamdu Lillahi Wa Laa Ilaaha Illallahu Wallahu Akbar
Wa Salli 'alaa Sayyidina Muhammad-i nilladhee qaala
Sub'haanAllahi wa bi Hamdihi
Wa Salli 'alaa Sayyidina Muhammad-i nilladhee qaala
Laa Ilaha Illallahu Wahdahoo Laa Sharikalahoo
Lahu'l Mulku wa Lahu'l Hamdu wa Huwa 'Alaa Kulli Shay-in Qadeer

O Allah! Bestow blessings on Sayyidina Muhammad who said:
"Glory be to Allah and all praise is for Allah
and none is to be worshipped but Allah and Allah is the Greatest."
And bestow blessings on Sayyidina Muhammad who said:
"Glory be to Allah as He Himself Glorifies and Praises Himself."
And bestow blessings on Sayyidina Muhammad who said:
"None is to be worshipped but Allah; He is One; He has no partner.
His is the Kingdom and His is the Praise and He has power over all things."

His Scholarship

The miracle is that Shaykh 'Abdur Rahman Chohravi Rahmatullahi 'alaih did not obtain a madrasa education beyond learning Qur'anic recitation, nor did he learn how to write. His Majmu'ah Salawaat u'r Rasul is therefore a gift from Allah Ta'ala. It took 12 years, 8 months and 20 days to complete; and was sent for publication to his Khalifa in Rangoon, Burma in the year the Shaykh left his earthly existence in Pakistan on 1st Dhu'l Hijja 1342 A.H.

The preface to the Majmu'ah gives the life history of the Shaykh. That he was destined for great heights was revealed at the tender age of eight when he kept optional fasts for 40 continuous days while being initiated into tariqa (spiritual path leading to Allah Ta'ala). While yet a child, he achieved tazkiya (spiritual purification). Sub'haanAllah!

When you recite Majmu'ah Salawaat u'r Rasul, you realise that Muslim scholarship is alive and well, but that it is not disseminated widely enough. If a book remotely resembling this masterpiece had been produced by a Christian concerning his religion, dozens of Ph.D's would already have been produced on it but the aim of Muslims is to seek Ridha Allah (the Pleasure of Allah) and just the reciting of the Majmu'ah from cover to cover is enough of an achievement. And now we can benefit from its translation as well in Urdu by Shaykh ul Hadith Mawlana Muhammad Ashraf Siyalwi, of which the first six chapters have already been done with great loving care befitting its dignity and stature.

The Majmu'ah is in the tradition of Imam al-Jazuli's Dalaail u'l Khairaat-(Proofs of Good Deeds), in that it is a compilation of salawaat existing upto that time. It is evident that Allah Ta'ala had opened the heart of Shaykh 'Abdur Rahman Chohravi to the vast seas of 'ulum (knowledge) of this world as well as the Hereafter. He was an authority on salawaat, dua, awraad and azkaar of which he presented his choicest collection in 1410 pages of the Majmu'ah. Indeed, he loved Dalaail u'l Khairaat so much that he composed a salaat on it as follows:

Allahumma Salli wa Sallim 'alaa Daleeli'l Khairaati
Salaatan tudallilunaa bihaa
Bi Dalaaili'l Khairaati wa Shawaariqi'l Anwaari
Wa tukhayyirunaa bihaa bikhayri khiyaari'l akhyaari'l abraari
Fastabiqu'l Khairaat

O Allah! Bestow blessings and peace on the "Proof of Good Deeds";
such blessings as in Dalaail u'l Khairaat wa Shawaariqu'l Anwaar
(Proofs of Good Deeds and The Brilliant Burst of Sunshine),
by means of which You may show us
and by means of which You may make us good people,
with the pick of the pious elite, the best of the righteous,
(as You said in the Holy Qur'an):
therefore, hasten to do good deeds (2:148; and 5:48).

The beloved Prophet Sallallahu 'alaihi wa Sallam is Daleel u'l Khairaat-(Proof of Goodness), Imam Jazuli compiled a book of blessings on him called Dalaail u'l Khairaat (Proofs of Good Deeds) and Shaykh 'Abdur Rahman Chohravi composed a salaat on the Daleel u'l Khairaat with the title Dalaail u'l Khairaat to fulfil Allah's command of Fastabiqu'l Khairaat! Isn't that neat and special?

Chapter sixteen of the Majmu'ah titled "Fee 'Azamatihi wa 'Izzatihi" (On His Greatness And Respect), has 196 salawaat composed on a similar pattern. They start with an attributive name in praise of the beloved Prophet Sallallahu 'alaihi wa Sallam and end with a verse or part of the verse of the Qur'an. These form the Salawaat u'l 'Uzmaa (The Great Invocation of Blessings) of the Shaykh and have been printed separately in another kitab titled Awraad u'l Qaadiriyyah Rahmaniyyah (Regular Voluntary Invocations of the Qaadiriyyah Rahmaniyyah) compiled by al-Allamah as-Sayyid Muhammad Tayyib Shah Rahmatullahi 'alaih. Those who feel overwhelmed by the Majmu'ah would do well to recite at least the Salawaat u'l 'Uzmaa of the great Shaykh.

This naturally raises the question: if you really aspire to recite the encyclopaedic Majmu'ah from cover to cover, how would you really go about doing it? If you recite a chapter a day, you can complete its thirty chapters in a month. Each chapter takes about two to three hours to recite, depending on how fast and proficient you are at Arabic recitation. On the other hand, if the mureedeeen (disciples) decide to adopt a more leisurely pace and recite a chapter a week (7 pages a day), that would give them at most 21 minutes of recitation every day and at this rate, they can complete the Majmu'ah in seven months. Allahu Akbar, Allah is The Greatest!

To gain a flavour of it and some appreciation, the initiate would be well advised to recite at least the first three chapters because they form an integrated whole, starting with and ending in Asma u'l Husna, with salawaat and dua interspersed in-between. That might indeed provide the encouragement to complete the whole kitab! However, before embarking on this momentous venture, the saalik (spiritual traveller) would be well advised to get the ijaza (permission) of the Shaykh (spiritual master).

His Dua

It is fitting to conclude with the dua at the end of Chapter 15 in Volume 1 which combines dua with Asma u'l Husna, verses of the Holy Qur'an and salaat in a style that is unique to Shaykh 'Abdur Rahman Chohravi Rahmatullahi 'alaih.

Allahumma Yaa Hayyu Yaa Qayyoomu Yaa Hannaanu Yaa Mannaanu
Yaa Dayyaanu Yaa Sultaanu Yaa Sub'haanu
Laa Ilaaha Illa Anta Sub'haanaka Innee Kuntu Minazzalimeen
Fastajabnaa Lahoo Wa Najjaynaahu Minal Ghammi
Wa Kadhaalika Nunjil Mu'mineen
Wa Zakariyyaa idh Naadaa Rabbahoo
Rabbi laa Tadharnee Fardan wa Anta Khayrul Waritheen

Allahumma Salli wa Sallim 'alaa Sayyidina Muhammad-in
Wa 'alaa aali Sayyidina Muhammad-in
Madh-hari'l Ahadiyyati wa
Majlaa Hadhra-ti't-Tajalliyaa-ti'l Qudsiyya-ti'l Waahidiyyati
Wa Hudhoori Hadharaa-ti'l Muqaddasa-ti'l Wahdaaniyyati
Qul Huwallahu Ahad Allahussamad
Lam Yalid Wa Lam Yoolad Wa Lam Yakullahoo Kufuwan Ahad.

O Allah! O The Ever-Living, O The Self-Subsisting, O The Merciful , O The Ever-Giving,
O The Giver of Religion, O The Ruler, O The Glorified
None is to be worshipped but You. Glory be to You. Truly, I was one of the unjust.
Then We responded to him and delivered him from grief
and thus do We deliver the believers.
And Zakaria when he called his Lord:
O my Lord! Leave me not alone and You are the best of inheritors (21:87-89)

O Allah! Bestow blessings and peace on Sayyidina Muhammad
and on the family of Sayyidina Muhammad,
who is clear in (his declaration of) Divine Unity, and
who is manifestly present in the Sacred Manifestation of the Oneness of Allah
and present in the Sacred Presence of the One and Only.
Say: He is Allah, The One. Allah is He on whom all depend.
He begets not, nor is He begotten. And there is none like Him. (112:1-4)
